I would say to anyone considering nursing jobs in Darwin – do it! There are so many great people up here... I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside. Not only is the work great… but you’ll never be stuck for things to do! There’s an abundance of bars & restaurants, shopping, entertainment, the famous Mindil markets, and the national parks such as Litchfield and Kakadu are not far away at all.
I started nursing with HCA after driving the West coast with a friend who was travel nursing. I instantly fell in love with WA, but also the idea that I could design my life, choose my time off, and use my career to explore the country at the same time. ICU during the pandemic had been tough and I was keen to get out of the city and get back into nature in my time off work. HCA R&R is now my primary income
My skillset is mostly rural ED with some MPS primary care which means I’m pretty prepared for whatever situation decides to walk through the door. I had a great time at Burnie, it was one of the larger ED’s I’ve worked in. I loved being able to explore northwest Tasmania while I was there. From Burnie I was fortunate enough to see some pretty awesome places, including cradle mountain in full snow, in summer!
I trained in the NHS and worked in the UK in a mix of ED, Corrections, and Coronary care for 4 years before moving to Australia. I have been working with HCA for a total of 2 years now, and it’s been incredible. I’ve been given the opportunity to be nursing in Australia, to develop my skills, specialise and meet so many amazing people. I’ve always loved travelling, so being paid to do so and also develop as a clinician is a dream.
My first placement started in Trebonne, just out of Ingham, QLD. Ever since that first placement I haven’t stopped booking more, as soon as one finishes I’m already heading off for the next contract. Lately, I’ve been dotting my way around the country side and have now reached Cleve in South Australia. I’m currently on a 2 month contract in Cleve and am already loving it here.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
New to Remote Program
Healthcare Australia’s (HCA) New to Remote Pathway is a guided placement journey, unique to HCA, designed to support eligible candidates in developing their existing clinical knowledge and experience towards the goal of working in Remote Health.
There are two pathways for the New to Remote Program (Minimum 4 years relevant experience required):
- Primary Health / Remote Area Nurse (RAN) / Remote Area Midwife (RAM)
- Aged Care / Remote Aged Care
All placements within the ‘New to Remote Program’ are designed to expose candidates to various aspects, including agency life, autonomous practice, indigenous health aspects, and on-call/call-out systems.
Primary Health Pathway
Looking to acquire more experience in Primary Healthcare as a nurse or midwife whilst working in remote communities in WA, NT, and tropical QLD. Click here to view the criteria.
