A DAY IN THE LIFE

Your Time As a
HCA Speechie

Dysphagia is a common condition in ageing adults, with up to 60% of individuals in aged care suffering from swallowing difficulties. Some of the risk factors for dysphagia, and some of the health issues you may come across include: Natural ageing/age related changes, Neurodegenerative diseases, Sjogren Disease, Mouth, throat or oesophageal cancer and more.

As aged care Speech Pathologists, you will work in partnership with other members of the multidisciplinary team to achieve the best outcome for our residents. You will get to work closely with Dietitians, Nurses, GPs, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Dentists, as well as many other specialists – making your role rewarding and collaborative.

  • Shadowing: The first few weeks working
with us will consist of onsite shadowing with our experienced speech pathologists to familiarise you
with our processes and day-to-day duties. This will look
different for each new staff member and will be completed
    until you’re comfortable working independently.
  • Supervised Practice: Ongoing regular supervised practice by our Senior Speech Pathologist. This provides therapists with the opportunity to reflect on their own practice and allows for greater opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Ongoing clinical support: Our senior speech pathologist
is always available (via call or message) to answer or talk
through any clinical questions or issues. We also have a
speech pathology group chat to discuss clinical queries
    collaboratively as a team.

HCA supports all our allied health therapists with professional development events, mentoring and clinical support.

  • 2024 PD Calendar: Monthly PD events hosted by industry leaders that are targeted at developing your clinical
and non-clinical skills, no matter your experience or background. Plus, you will have an active role in curating upcoming events through suggestions of topics and feedback.
  • Speech Pathology Meetings: Regular team meetings to collaboratively discuss any clinical concerns or questions and learn from each other’s experiences.
  • Clinical Support Hotline: Dedicated Clinical Support Coordinator to assist you with any Aged Care related advice or support you need.
